NeurOptimal®
NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback at CFIR
NeurOptimal® is a gentle, non invasive neurofeedback technology that supports the brain’s natural ability to self regulate. It does not stimulate or alter the brain; instead, it provides information that helps the brain reorganize itself. NeurOptimal® is widely used with children, adults, and older adults, and is considered an FDA approved wellness technology.
At CFIR, NeurOptimal® is delivered by trained clinicians within a psychotherapy setting, allowing your neurofeedback experience to be supported, monitored, and integrated into your broader mental health care.
How NeurOptimal® Works
NeurOptimal® is a form of non linear neurofeedback that monitors your brain’s moment to moment electrical activity (EEG). Small sensors placed on your scalp and ears track rapid or atypical shifts in your brain’s patterns. When the system detects one of these shifts, it briefly interrupts the music you are listening to.
This interruption acts like a fast, automatic signal that helps the brain notice what it is doing. Because the brain naturally prefers efficiency and stability, it begins to move away from patterns associated with stress or inefficiency and toward more balanced functioning. Nothing is added to your brain, and nothing is forced — the system simply provides feedback, and your brain does the rest.
Over time, these micro adjustments accumulate and can support greater flexibility, resilience, and ease in daily life.
What a Session Looks Like
- Five small sensors are placed on your scalp and ears using a gentle conductive paste to monitor your brain’s electrical activity.
- You sit comfortably in a recliner, listening to music and watching soft visuals on a screen for 33 minutes.
- As you relax, the system continuously monitors your brain for instability or rapid shifts in state.
- When a shift is detected, the system creates a brief audible interruption or “glitch” in the music — this is the feedback cue.
- These cues signal your brain to pause and reset, gradually strengthening self regulation, resilience, and flexibility.
- Afterward, the sensors are removed, and you complete a brief self report questionnaire, reviewed by your NeurOptimal® clinician and, if applicable, your treating therapist.
Each appointment is approximately 45 minutes, including about 10 minutes for setup and wrap up. The training is effortless, non invasive, and suitable for all ages — you don’t need to focus or “do” anything; the brain naturally adjusts on its own.
Who NeurOptimal® Helps
NeurOptimal® is not a treatment for any specific diagnosis. Instead, it supports overall nervous system functioning and regulation. Clients often report improvements in:
- Trauma: Helps calm overactive survival responses and reduce hypervigilance and emotional reactivity. Promotes a greater sense of safety and well-being by helping the nervous system self-regulate more effectively.
- Trauma related symptoms
- Anxiety, panic, and emotional reactivity
- Stress and overwhelm
- Sleep quality
- Attention, focus, and ADHD symptoms
- Mood regulation
- Cognitive clarity
- Sensory sensitivities
- Recovery from stress and triggers
Because NeurOptimal® works with the brain’s natural self regulating processes, it can be helpful for individuals seeking greater stability, resilience, and ease in daily life.
Research and Client Reported Outcomes
Client reported outcomes from individuals completing 11–20 NeurOptimal® sessions show meaningful improvements across multiple areas of functioning.
What Clients Reported
- 66% reported significant improvement in trauma symptoms
- 64% reported significant improvement in anxiety, panic, and phobia symptoms
- 67% reported significant improvement in ADHD symptoms, and 60% reported significant improvement in attention and focus
- 86% reported significant improvement in stress management
- 46% reported significant improvement in emotion regulation and sensory sensitivities
- 72% reported significant improvement in depression symptoms, along with improvements in sleep
These results are based on client reported outcomes and are not diagnostic claims, but they illustrate how NeurOptimal® supports the brain’s natural self regulating capacity—allowing improvements to emerge across many areas of life.

FAQS
What might I experience during or immediately after a session?
People respond to NeurOptimal® differently, and all experiences are normal.
Pleasant shifts may include calmness, clarity, relaxation, or improved focus. Temporary emotional or physical shifts such as irritability, sadness, restlessness, fatigue, or tension can occur as the brain recalibrates. These sensations typically settle within a few sessions. No noticeable reaction is also common and does not mean the training is ineffective — changes may be occurring gradually in the background.
Progress often appears in daily life rather than during the session itself. Many clients notice that situations that once felt overwhelming become easier to manage.
How many sessions are recommended?
Every brain is different. Some clients notice subtle shifts within the first few sessions, while more meaningful or lasting changes often emerge around 11–20 sessions.
Because the brain continues adjusting between sessions, consistency is helpful. After 10 sessions, you will meet with your NeurOptimal® clinician to review your questionnaire results and discuss any changes you’ve noticed.
Why complete NeurOptimal® at CFIR?
Clinical support and monitoring A trained clinician follows your progress, helps you understand what you’re experiencing, and supports you in identifying patterns or changes over time.
Integrated care Your post‑session questionnaires are reviewed by both your NeurOptimal® clinician and your treating therapist, allowing insights to be incorporated into your broader therapy work.
Guidance through challenges If emotional or physical shifts arise, your clinician can help you navigate them and adjust pacing or frequency as needed.
Insurance eligibility Sessions at CFIR are billed as counselling services under a Registered Psychotherapist, which may allow for coverage depending on your benefits plan.
How is NeurOptimal® different from at‑home devices?
At‑home nervous system tools such as Muse, HRV monitors, breathing apps, or VR relaxation programs are typically biofeedback or mindfulness‑based. They measure body‑based signals (like heart rate, breathing, muscle tension, skin conductance, or simplified EEG) and coach you toward specific states such as calm or focus. These tools require active participation and skill‑building.
NeurOptimal® is different. It works directly with real‑time EEG, requires no effort or strategy, and supports the whole brain rather than targeting one state. Instead of training you to achieve a particular outcome, NeurOptimal® provides information that allows the brain to reorganize itself naturally.
In short: At‑home devices help you practice calming skills. NeurOptimal® helps the brain and nervous system reorganize themselves.
How is NeurOptimal® different from mindfulness practices?
Mindfulness practices involve active effort — focusing on the breath, observing thoughts, redirecting attention, and staying present. These practices build conscious skills such as awareness and emotional regulation, but they can be challenging when someone is overwhelmed or highly activated.
NeurOptimal® is passive. You do not need to focus or apply any technique. The system works with the brain’s automatic regulatory processes, which can make mindfulness easier and more accessible over time.
Mindfulness trains your attention. NeurOptimal® supports the brain’s capacity to regulate itself.
Is NeurOptimal® Right for You?
NeurOptimal® can be used alongside psychotherapy and medication. It does not interfere with medications or therapeutic approaches, and many clients find it enhances their ability to engage in therapy.
If you’re curious about whether NeurOptimal® may support your goals, our clinicians can help you explore whether it’s a good fit.
