Dr. Mitra Gholamain, C.Psych.

In my clinical practice, I offer individual psychotherapy and psychological assessment services for clients who suffer from a wide range of issues including bereavement, depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, work stress and chronic illness. Furthermore, I offer couples counseling, and family therapy interventions informed by narrative, family systems and emotion-focused approaches.

In my view, most clients seek therapy when they feel alone in the face of overwhelming life challenges. Sometimes clients need to expand their awareness of their inner experiences & life circumstances or develop greater emotional competence in coping with psychological distress.  Other times they need to find safety and resilience in facing a traumatic life event or find courage to bond deeply in an intimate relationship. An important part of therapy is to understand what a client needs in order to grow and live a more fulfilling life.

When we come together, we initially spend some time understanding the nature of your concerns. If you experience a pressing psychological issue (i.e. Anxiety) that interferes with your ability to fulfill your life responsibilities, together we would apply therapeutic strategies that could help you feel emotionally more stable and regain your confidence in your ability to manage your distress. Such strategies may include mindfulness stress reduction, cognitive behavioral and body-focused grounding interventions.

Sometimes you may need support in working through deeper psychological issues (i.e. Trauma) or relationship/personality dynamics that have affected your ability to have more meaningful relationships and/or flourish at work. These types of issues can best be addressed by a psycho-dynamic approach that helps you connect to sources of your suffering and unleash suppressed emotions that stifle your creativity and your capacity to bond in an intimate relationship.

In addition to psychotherapy, I offer clinical psychological assessment services. A typical psycho-diagnostic assessment involves having in-depth conversations about your life in order to understand current life stressors, relationship dynamics, emotional and coping style. You’ll also be requested to complete psychometric measures that offer an objective analysis of your current psychological issues. Once the information is collected, results will be presented in a report that highlights areas of concern and offers recommendations for alleviating your symptoms. In my view, writing a psychological report is like telling the story of your life with tact, respect and consideration.

I also specialize in assessment of educational issues. I conduct psycho-educational assessments that offer diagnosis of a variety of learning issues such as reading and writing disability, math disability (dyscalculia), cognitive impairment, or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). I offer psycho-educational assessment for children, adolescents and adults.

A learning disability can greatly impede a student’s academic progress and cause her to feel discouraged and emotionally overwhelmed. A psycho-educational assessment can help identify the root causes of a student’s learning issues and offer recommendations for remedial support. College/university students with a history of learning disability may also need to undergo an updated psycho-educational assessment in order to receive proper accommodation during post-secondary education.

I have received my Masters and Doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Toronto. I subsequently had a 4-year clinical training in psychoanalysis at the Toronto Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis (TICP).

Upon graduating in 1998, I worked as staff Psychologist at the University of Toronto. My professional responsibility included providing psychological treatment to university students.  In my capacity as a psychologist, I provided individual, couple, & group therapy for university students and I supervised the clinical training of graduate psychology interns.

I am a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, Ontario Psychological Association, and the Toronto Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis. Areas of professional designation include the provision of psychological treatment and assessment for adults, adolescents and children.
