Marla MacDonald, M.A., CT (Provisional)
Welcome to the first step in your therapeutic journey. Seeking out therapy demonstrates immense courage and a genuine desire to grow. As you begin your journey, as your therapist I will seek to provide you with the support you need meet your goals – whether that means engaging in deep inner work, developing practical skills, or creating a safe space where you can simply be yourself. I’m excited to help you feel more empowered and grounded in who you are as we work together.
I work with individuals seeking to better understand relationships and find clarity, purpose, and authenticity in the face of life’s challenges. We will also explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that may once have been adaptive but no longer serve you. To achieve these goals, I use an evidence-based integrative therapy model that includes elements of cognitive-behavioural (CBT), acceptance and commitment (ACT), emotion-focused, psychodynamic, attachment-based, and existential therapies. This approach can be especially helpful for clients who feel stuck or weighed down by their past. Our early experiences often become the blueprint for how we interpret ourselves, our relationships, and the world around us, and insight into these patterns is an important part of creating meaningful change.
I work with a wide range of clients who are facing diverse range of challenges. I the past, I have worked with individuals experiencing emotional and relational difficulties. I have supported clients facing concerns related to stress, anger, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationships, personality disorders, infidelity, communication challenges, sexual functioning, sexuality, and gender. My specialties include 2SLGBTQIA+ support and working with high-achieving individuals struggling with perfectionism, people-pleasing, anxiety, and stress. This includes women with ADHD, who often experience these challenges alongside their ADHD in interconnected ways.
In therapy, you can expect a nonjudgmental, compassionate, and safe environment. I bring a culturally sensitive lens to my practice, recognizing the ways that identity, systems, and lived experience shape mental health. I bring my expertise, curiosity, and passion to support you in achieving your goals, while honouring your autonomy in shaping the direction of therapy. We will begin by exploring what brings you to therapy and identify the goals you would like to work toward. I will also complete a cutting edge, evidence assessment to better understand your presenting concerns and gather a holistic picture of your life experiences.
Over the past decade, I have completed a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University and a Master of Arts at McGill University, in order to grow my therapeutic skills and experience. In addition to my clinical work, I currently hold the position of Learner Well-being Consultant at the University of Prince Edward Island, where I provide wellbeing support services to medical learners navigating the demands of a rigorous training program. Currently, I am a provisionally licensed counselling therapist under the supervision of Dr. Jennifer Bradley, C. Psych (128). I have previously completed training at Sarah Carr Psychological Services, where I received supervised training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
