Karen Martinez, M.Ed., R.P.
You may already have a good understanding of yourself and your patterns. You may know where they come from and even know what you “should” do differently yet still find yourself reacting in the same ways. Maybe you feel overwhelmed, disconnected, stuck in your thoughts, or caught in emotional and relationship patterns that you want to change but don’t quite know how.
This is where I often begin my work with clients. I work with thoughtful, self-aware people who have spent a great deal of time trying to understand themselves and their difficulties intellectually but still feel stuck emotionally or in their relationships. My approach is relational and experiential; I place a lot of value on creating a therapeutic relationship that feels warm, safe, respectful, and collaborative, where you can feel genuinely seen and understood while also being supported in exploring parts of yourself or your relationship that may be difficult to access on your own.
I believe that symptoms often have a story behind them, and that what we experience on the surface can point to something deeper. Emotional difficulties can be ways that unmet needs, relational patterns, and past experiences continue to show up in our lives. Together, rather than focusing only on understanding and managing symptoms, we slow things down enough to explore what is happening beneath the surface; your emotions, needs, beliefs, and the ways you have learned to navigate the world. We also explore how certain patterns from past experiences may still be shaping the way you experience yourself and your relationships today.
From our first sessions, we will take time to understand what brings you to therapy, your personal history, and the patterns shaping your current experience or relationship. When appropriate, I may also use evidence based assessment to help guide our work together. My integrative approach draws from Emotion Focused Therapy, attachment, systemic and psychodynamic perspectives, mindfulness, somatic, and trauma informed approaches, which I adapt to your individual or relational needs.
Through our work together, my hope is to help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself, build greater self-trust, emotional awareness, and flexibility; experience less reactivity; feel more confident identifying and expressing your emotions and needs; help you develop a stronger sense of how you want to move through your life and relationships and feel overall more connected.
With couples, I help partners understand the cycles they become caught in, particularly patterns of conflict, distance, misunderstanding, or emotional disconnection. Rather than focusing on who is right or wrong in disagreements, our work focuses on creating greater emotional safety, strengthening communication, and understanding each partner’s differences and underlying needs, including how each partner’s history can shape the way they show up in the relationship. Together, we work toward new ways of relating to one another, including communicating differently, repairing after conflict, and creating more supportive patterns in everyday life that respect both partners as individuals while supporting the collaboration and connection in the relationship.
I hold a Honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology (B.Sc) and a Master’s in Education with a concentration in Counselling Psychology (M.Ed) from the University of Ottawa. I practice as a Registered Psychotherapist at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships under the supervision of Dr. Karine Côté, C.Psych.
Before becoming a psychotherapist, I worked in youth mental health, community support, and university research. These experiences shaped my commitment to approaching therapy with compassion, curiosity, and respect for each person’s individual story.
