Ottawa Team

Philip MacGregor, M.Sc.

Taking the step to seek therapy can be both daunting and transformative. It’s often a challenge to find a therapist who resonates with your needs and preferences. I hope the information below provides insight into my therapeutic approach and helps you gauge if we might be a good match.

I specialize in working with adults facing a variety of challenges, including depression, anxiety, trauma, emotional regulation issues, and interpersonal difficulties. Additionally, I offer comprehensive psychological assessments—ranging from psychodiagnostic evaluations to specific packages for ADHD and ASD. Throughout our therapeutic journey, my primary goal is to ensure that your aspirations are at the forefront, allowing us to focus on your desired outcomes, concerns, and unique needs. Whether you seek therapy or assessment, we will collaboratively establish realistic goals and formulate a clear plan to achieve them.

In our initial session, I aim to understand what has prompted you to seek therapy now and to gather historical context surrounding your current concerns. We’ll discuss your coping strategies up to this point and collaboratively create a treatment plan tailored to your goals. This process typically involves a comprehensive exploration of your past—covering your childhood to the present—while assessing your current symptoms. This foundational understanding will help illuminate any past experiences contributing to your current challenges.

Once we have agreed upon your treatment plan and established your goals, our therapy will encompass four essential components: 1. Psychoeducation: Here, I teach you relevant skills, concepts, and insights; 2. Exploration: We will delve into the thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relational patterns that underpin your distress; 3. In-Session Practice: Together, we will engage in new experiences and practice the skills you are learning; 4. Between-Session Growth: You will apply these skills in your daily life, fostering real-world growth.

My therapeutic style is integrative, combining various approaches tailored to your specific needs and preferences. Drawing primarily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), as well as psychodynamic and attachment-based perspectives, I work to create an environment that fosters your personal growth and healing.

As a PhD candidate in clinical psychology at the University of Ottawa, I am currently completing my residency at CFIR under the guidance of Dr. Dino Zuccarini, C.Psych., and Dr. Erica Tatham, C.Psych. My background includes practicum placements at the Centre for Psychological Services and Research, Montfort Hospital, and the Orleans Psychological Health Team.

Previously, I have completed practicum placements at the Centre for Psychological Services and Research, the Montfort Hospital and with the Orleans Psychological Health Team. As part of my ongoing graduate training, I also co-author scientific research articles and regularly present my research findings at  international academic conferences.

If you are exploring therapy and seeking a supportive, goal-oriented process to work through your challenges, I invite you to reach out. Together, we can embark on a meaningful journey toward healing and personal growth.
