I provide psychological treatment and assessment services in both English and French to adult clients facing a variety of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, concerns related to self-esteem and identity, difficulties with emotion regulation, trauma, and challenges adjusting to life transitions and other stresses.

I have extensive experience in working with adults with a range of concerns. I have a particular interest and experience in working with individuals who have experienced longstanding difficulties with emotion regulation or mood swings, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. I also have experience conducting therapy groups focused on skills training to address difficulties with emotion regulation.

During our first appointment, I will work with you to identify the challenges that have brought you to therapy. As part of this, I conduct a comprehensive assessment using scientifically validated tools, and gather information about your history and past experiences. I then provide feedback about my understanding of your difficulties, and work collaboratively with you to establish your therapeutic goals and how we can best work together. My approach to psychotherapy brings together different evidence-based therapeutic orientations, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, and mindfulness-based interventions. I am open to adjusting my approach as needed over the course of treatment to help you achieve your goals. One of the most important aspects of any therapy is the relationship between client and therapist. As such, I strive to offer a space where you feel genuinely heard and supported as you explore difficult thoughts and emotions, and work toward approaching life’s challenges in a new way.

I completed a BA in Psychology at the University of Sherbrooke, and MS and PhD degrees in Clinical Psychology at Pennsylvania State University. I completed my clinical internship at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Since 2011, I have worked in a variety of clinical settings, including both inpatient and outpatient services and a community mental health centre. At the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships, I am currently practicing under the supervision of Drs. Dino Zuccarini, C.Psych. and Aleks Milosevic, C.Psych.

Over the past several years, I have been actively involved in research related to psychotherapy process and outcome, with a particular focus on personality disorders. My dissertation focused on the association between the therapeutic relationship and symptom change, and I have published a number of journal articles and book chapters related to psychotherapy. I have also served as a peer reviewer for journal articles related to the treatment of personality disorders.

My clinical practice focuses on identifying possible neuropsychological difficulties and helping clients to better understand their individual cognitive profile. In doing so, clients often gain insight into their daily functioning and learn ways to adapt to any limitations that might exist. Practical recommendations are provided through one-on-one feedback and a detailed report so that clients, their families, and their healthcare providers can work together to maximize functioning. Above all, I strive to provide an objective opinion of an individual's cognitive functioning through the use of standardized neuropsychological measures and careful interpretation of results.

I have particular interests in working with clients who have experienced head injuries, those with psychiatric disorders affecting cognition, and older adults with degenerative conditions such as dementia. I also have extensive experience working with clients and caregivers to manage responsive behaviours in older adults to ensure safety and to minimize the need for more intrusive interventions.

I completed my Bachelor's degree with a double major in Biology and Psychology at the University of New Brunswick in 2002. I then attended University of Ottawa for my doctoral training. During graduate school I completed practica in diverse settings, including in-patient hospitals, out-patient clinics, and forensic institutions. Through coursework and clinical experience, I developed expertise in clinical psychology and clinical neuropsychology with adults. My pre-doctoral internship took place in London, Ontario. In that year, I completed neuropsychology rotations focused on psychiatric and neurological patients, as well as a rotation in a forensic psychiatric hospital. I received my PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2011, and subsequently worked as an instructor at University of Ottawa for two years.

I am currently a member of the Canadian Psychological Association. I regularly attend conferences and workshops focused on neuropsychology and clinical psychology, in order to acquire the most up-to-date knowledge in my field. In addition to working at CFIR, I am a part time instructor at University of Ottawa.

For all of us, life is full of surprises and sometimes it can be marked by major challenges. Since psychotherapy requires a lot of courage to open up to a stranger, choosing a therapist is an important step in the process of working through life’s challenges. I am pleased to present a summary of my experiences and interests in clinical psychology, and look forward to working together with you.

One of the key ingredients in successful therapy is the quality of the relationship between a client and his or her therapist. This is why it is important for me to develop trust and cooperation with clients to support them in their difficulties and help them meet their psychological needs. At the beginning of and throughout therapy, I work with clients to develop a deep understanding of who they are and what their difficulties are about, and offer them a treatment plan tailored to their objectives. We will work to develop skills and strategies to reduce current emotional distress, and resolve the self and relational difficulties underneath emotional distress to ensure long-lasting changes occur.

My therapeutic style is primarily based on a humanistic approach, integrating techniques from gestalt and object relations psychotherapy, emotion-focused therapy (EFT), and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).

For the past ten years, I have had the chance to work with adults and couples with various needs and challenges. My work has included but not been limited to the following difficulties: problems with mood and anxiety (including bereavement), interpersonal and relationship problems (including rebuilding trust and closeness), painful emotions related to present or past events including traumas, chronic disease management, eating disorders, and sleep disruptions.

Specifically, I have had the chance to apply my expertise in psychological assessment and psychotherapy by working in community mental health, hospital and private practice settings, including the Centre for Psychological Services at l’Université du Québec en Outaouais and the Montfort Hospital at their Clinical Health Psychology Services.

I also value professional development by participating in training workshops and maintain an interest in research to be informed on the latest evidence-based theories and interventions in my field. My doctoral thesis focused on the impact of ageist representations on prescribing anxiolytics to the elderly population, and their use thereof. My postdoctoral research focused on presenteeism and its effects on workers’ health. Moreover, as a collaborator in different research groups, I present at national and international conferences and collaborate on the submission of scientific articles on presenteeism and medication consumption in Canada.

I am currently registered as a psychologist by the College of Psychologists of Ontario and the Ordre des psychologues du Québec. I am also a member of the Canadian Psychological Association, the Canadian Association on Gerontology, the Société Québécoise pour la recherche en psychologie, and the Société québécoise de psychologie du travail et des organisations.

Throughout our lives, we all experience thoughts, behaviors, or emotions that we would like to change or improve. The biggest and most important step in this path to self-improvement is a better self-awareness and understanding of who we are. This requires getting to know the not-so-pretty parts of ourselves, which can be easier with a non-judgmental therapist at your side who can help guide you on your path to self-discovery. Sometimes in order to take care of yourself, you risk disappointing other people.

Trauma is something that I have personally experienced in all stages of life; therefore, when deciding what I wanted to do with my life and as a chosen career, it was simple: I wanted to help others like I had been helped. Emotional regulation is something that I am very passionate about and have been helping clients deal with throughout my career. I have worked with various populations including adults, couples, students, and even law enforcement and other emergency services personnel. I have helped many clients learn to manage addictions, and well as learn to self-regulate and cope with intense emotions. I understand critical incidents and the necessity of debriefings, as well as how to deal with stressful and traumatic life events.

Shame is a vicious cycle that many of us experience, even if we don’t realize that’s what it is. Shame can act like quicksand that pulls us in, and can leave us in a deep pit that spirals lower and lower. We can get sucked into the abyss and stay there for hours, days, or even years. The difference between guilt and shame is “I did something bad” vs. “I am a bad person”; and many of us suffer from this cognitive distortion without any real sense of hope for relief. Some of us turn to addictions to cope, others resort to anger and rage, or we can even engage in self-harm behaviors.

Research has shown time and time again that the most important determinant of successful therapy is the relationship between the therapist and the client. Thus, our working relationship will be crucial to your growth and success in treatment. I strive to create a warm, welcoming, and safe environment for you, while remaining honest and sincere. My treatment approach is based on psychodynamic principles, which looks at how past developmental and relationship experiences may have influenced your current struggles.

Our first session together is a “get to know one another” meeting, to ensure that both you and I will work well together, and that I am the best person to help you with your issues. I will try to understand your current difficulties and why you sought help at this time. Once we both agree to work together, you will complete a scientific-based assessment of your difficulties. This will help manage your treatment goals and identify the key areas we need to focus on. Your second session is a “feedback session”, where I will explain the results of your assessment, and we will work together to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

I am a registered member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, and a member of both the Canadian Psychological Association and the Ontario Psychological Association.

I completed my doctoral degree in Clinical Forensic Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. My research focused on understanding cynicism, as well as gender issues, in law enforcement. I served those who served others, conducting pre-hire and fitness-for-duty evaluations, peer support trainings and workshops, as well as critical incident stress debriefings. Since 2010, I have worked in different clinical settings such as outpatient clinics and private practice settings where I provided psychological assessments, as well as individual, couples, and family therapy. I have taught various workshops and trainings on trauma, stress management, peer support, etc. I also have experience using both biofeedback and neurofeedback in treating various disorders and stress. Just prior to coming to CFIR, I was a child victim advocate and coordinated child abuse investigations.

My clinical practice focuses on psychoeducational and psychodiagnostic assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. With theoretical backgrounds in Cognitive-Behavior Therapy, play therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, I provide an integrated evidence-based treatment to address your specific treatment goals.

I have extensive experience in various clinical and community settings, with particular interest in psychoeducational assessment. I have completed assessments for the Lambton-Kent District School Board, Avon-Maitland District School Board, and Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board. There, I worked closely with families and staff to complete a thorough assessment of areas of concern and provided detailed intervention recommendations for instructional, environmental, and evaluation accommodations at school. I have knowledge and experience working with school-board administrators, classroom teachers, special education resource teachers, and behavioural support teams to help provide students with specific interventions and accommodations to best meet their educational goals and needs.

I completed my Bachelor's degree in Psychology with Thesis at the University of Windsor in 2008. I also completed my Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Windsor. My Master’s Thesis focused on examining the relationship between childhood trauma and adult body image. During graduate school, I completed practicums in diverse settings, including the Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association, Maryvale Family and Adolescent Centre, and the Children’s Centre of Wayne County. After I obtained my Master’s degree, a large focus of my practice has been on psychoeducational and psychodiagnostics assessments (learning difficulties, giftedness, intellectual functioning, ADHD, developmental disorders, psychiatric diagnoses, personality and cognitive function).

I am registered as a Psychological Associate with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and my declared areas of practice include Clinical Psychology and School Psychology with children, adolescents, and adults. You don’t want to keep feeling this way, acting this way, or being in your relationships in this way. I admire you for being willing and open to look honestly at yourself, and for reaching out for professional support after you’ve tried to deal with things as best as you could on your own.

People who seek my professional help, whether for psychotherapy or psychological evaluations, are often having difficulties with negative emotions (like anger, anxiety, depression, or shame), behaviours that negatively affect their work or relationships (like aggression, addictions, or compulsions), or patterns in their relationships that prevent them from feeling good about themselves or developing more satisfying connections.

I have a specific interest and extensive clinical experience in the treatment of substance use-related difficulties and sexual addiction. I provide psychological services to individuals experiencing difficulties related to the use of all types of substances (alcohol, recreational drugs, prescription medications, anabolic steroids). My clients tend to have different concerns when addressing their substance use. Some of you might want to come in for assistance to address issues of unwanted substance use or over-use (e.g., binge use, frequent use), or addictive use (e.g., chronic use impairing how you are functioning in everyday life). Some of you might want to consult with me to explore your current substance use for the purpose of changing some aspect of your use (e.g., quantity, frequency), while some of you may to explore how to abstain from use and maintain abstinence. I also have clinical experience working with individuals who are distressed as a result of repeated or compulsive sexual behaviours (e.g., concerns about frequent pornography use, use of massage parlors and escorts) and risky sexual behaviours.

During our first appointment, you and I will clarify the issues that are of utmost concern to you, and in this session and throughout treatment you are in control of what we speak about at all times (i.e., you decide what you are comfortable to share with me, and only share if you are feeling safe and comfortable to do so). I will share with you my thoughts about what I believe is causing your current difficulties and together we will set up a treatment plan to achieve your goals. To understand your current difficulties, I will conduct a comprehensive, scientific-based assessment and gather information about your personal history and life experiences. As an integrative psychologist, I bring together various theories of human psychological development, and affective/emotion and neuroscience research, to inform the intervention strategies I use with my clients. To help you change and grow, I use interventions that are proven effective and that are tailored specifically to your needs and concerns, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, systemic, mindfulness-based, and motivational enhancement approaches.

I am currently serving as Clinical Director and Director of Clinical Training at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships. In these roles, I am primarily responsible for overseeing the development of clinical programs, services and training. Given my training background and clinical experience, I am currently the Head of the Substance Use Service and Sexual Addiction Service at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships. As a Head of Service, I develop programs and guide service delivery on the basis of evidence-based scientific research and provide clinical training to advanced doctoral students in clinical and counseling psychology. I also lead the Alcohol & Drug Evaluation Service in which scientific, evidence-based assessments are provided to our clients. In addition to my roles at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships, I am an Associate Professor at the Universite du Quebec en Outaouais in the department of Psychoeducation and Psychology.

I am a peer reviewer of substance use and addiction-related research for several medical journals, and have provided consultation to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and to an Ontario-wide workgroup to improve treatment of substance use disorders in individuals involved in the criminal justice system.

Since 2005, I have provided psychological assessment and treatment services in various settings including community health centres, outpatient mental health and substance use clinics, inpatient psychiatric and forensic psychiatric units, and private practices.

My B.Sc. in General Science (2002), B.A. in Psychology (2004), and M.A. (2007) and Ph.D. (2011) in Clinical Psychology were earned from the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario. I provide psychological assessment and treatment to adults and couples who are facing difficult emotions in their everyday lives, including deep hurts, corrosive anger, debilitating fears and anxiety, numbing withdrawal, empty and detached feelings, grief, sadness and depression, guilt and shame. Throughout our therapeutic journey, I will provide you with a safe space to express and explore your feelings, emotions and thoughts. During your initial sessions, I will work collaboratively with you to identify your treatment goals and discuss the various treatment options available to achieve these goals. To better understand your current difficulties, I will conduct a thorough, individually-tailored assessment that includes scientific-based assessment strategies and obtaining details about your personal history.

I integrate various scientific, evidence-based treatment approaches to optimally address your specific concerns and goals, including: cognitive-behavioural, interpersonal/psychodynamic, attachment and emotion-focused interventions. Everyone experiences stressors. Sometimes it’s possible to manage them on our own and sometimes it’s necessary to seek extra help. When life’s challenges become overwhelming, finding a good fit with a therapist is the first step in achieving a well-balanced and fulfilling life. When I partner with you, I will help you to face and cope with life’s inevitable stressors.

I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families with a wide range of presenting concerns, including: anger, impulse control, and problem behavior; attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder; learning disorders; developmental disabilities; emotion regulation and mood difficulties (e.g., anxiety, depression); low self-esteem, body image concerns, and eating disorders; self-harm; suicidality; relationship problems; family conflict; adjustment problems; attachment disturbances; and trauma. I am also experienced in conducting comprehensive psychological assessments, including: psychoeducational (e.g., intellectual functioning, learning difficulties, ADHD, giftedness), autism spectrum disorder, and assessments of behaviour, personality, and social-emotional functioning.

In our work together, I will give consideration to your unique constellation of strengths and needs when selecting evidence-based assessments and interventions in order to best help you to achieve your goals. I draw from a number of psychotherapy models to address your individual concerns, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy, client-centred therapy, attachment-based therapy, and mindfulness.

I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and their families with a variety of presenting problems and multicultural considerations, across diverse clinical settings, including schools, hospitals, residential treatment centres, and community mental health centres. I completed my Honours B.A. in Psychology at Algoma University and both my M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Windsor. I am registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario with competency in Clinical Psychology with children, adolescents, adults, and families.

With respect to research, I have published an article in a peer-reviewed journal, co-authored a book chapter in The Comprehensive Guide to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders, assisted in organizing an international symposium on Arab youth identity, and participated in a panel discussion of treatment of multi-risk youth at an international conference. I have conducted research on parent-child relationships and presented the findings at numerous national conferences. I also strive to stay informed of current issues, research, and developments in psychology in order to maintain the highest standards of care. For several years, I taught an undergraduate course on Clinical Psychology at the University of Windsor. I am a member of the Canadian Psychological Association, Ontario Psychological Association, and Ottawa Academy of Psychology.

Too often one of the most difficult first steps in working through life challenges, whether large or small, is to acknowledge the need for support and to seek out the help that you need. My work with adolescents, adults and couples has been to accompany them on a journey that involves building a toolset designed to navigate their particular challenges.

I see clients struggling to cope with a range of issues related to depression and mood, anxiety, gender and sexuality, fertility and adoption, different types of relationships and sexual problems (e.g., arousal, desire, orgasm, pain), and stress associated with everyday life matters.

I have specific interests and extensive clinical experience working with clients dealing with chronic pain, and neuroendocrinological, immune, and neurotraumatic conditions. I work with these clients to resolve many of the psychological issues that surround long-term chronic health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, trauma and stress, existential crises and difficulties with acceptance, and substance use). I have a well-developed knowledge base in the complex interactions of body and mind, or in this case medicine and psychology and consider the individual as a whole person during the assessment and treatment process.

In our initial meetings, I will help you (or you and your partner) to identify your treatment goals. I will also conduct a comprehensive assessment, including use of reliable and valid questionnaires and a comprehensive personal history to understand your current challenges and life circumstances. Following these meetings, we will work together to design a treatment plan based on a thorough assessment and one that is specifically suited to your needs and goals. I truly believe that psychotherapy achieves the best results when clients are actively involved in guiding their treatment plan. My therapeutic style typically uses evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioural and schema-focused therapies, and interpersonal-psychodynamic-attachment based therapies. I strongly believe in working with the individual in front of me and therefore will employ other techniques that I have trained in as appropriate for the person or particular situation.

Beyond my work as an associate at CFIR, I am a Canadian Research Chair in Behavioural Neurobiology at Carleton University and am an adjunct assistant professor at Yale University School of Medicine. I currently hold a Brain and Behavior Foundation award for my research into novel treatments of anxiety disorders. I have taught courses such as Developmental & Abnormal Psychology, Hormones and Behaviour/Sex and the Brain and have published numerous peer-reviewed publications related to maternal care/behavior and developmental neuroscience.

I am registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and L’Ordre des Psychologues du Quebec, and am a member of the Canadian Psychological Association.

Each one of us faces challenges in our lives. At times these challenges can overwhelm us and adversely impact our thoughts, emotions and behaviours diminishing our ability to cope with life. Deciding to manage these challenges by seeking psychotherapy is a courageous first step toward healing. For nearly twenty years I have had the privilege of accompanying many people who seek to regain wholeness and meaning in their lives as they struggled to overcome an array of issues which may weigh them down.

I work with individuals with a wide variety of mental health concerns. Many struggle with depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem stemming from difficult childhood experiences, early relationships and current stressors in their lives. Because of the high incidence of childhood trauma that I have encountered personally and in my professional practice, I received specialized training in PTSD with a focus on childhood abuse. In addition, I have had extensive training and experience in grief and loss assisting people as they try to find meaning and a renewed sense of purpose amidst loss.

The psychotherapy that I offer is from a confidential, compassionate, client-centred, non-judgemental perspective. My international training in mental health and as a multifaith spiritual health professional, have given me expertise in offering culturally sensitive psychotherapy. I have worked with people from many walks of life—adolescents, and adults, civilians and military personnel, the chronically ill and those with a single episode of illness, as well as those of diverse cultural backgrounds, and sexual orientations. The opportunity to work with such a broad spectrum of people, has been enriching and rewarding.

Although the primary therapeutic model used in my practice is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), I believe that it is important to fit the therapy to the client. Therefore, I draw on a range of psychotherapeutic modalities and theories in an integrative staged approach to psychotherapy. These include Attachment Theory and Neuro-developmental Theory to help make sense of early childhood experiences; elements of Emotion-focused Therapy to enable the resolution of intra and interpersonal relationship issues; Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Compassion-focused Therapy and Mindfulness Therapy to aid in the development of self-acceptance and compassion amidst difficult situations; Sensory-motor Psychotherapy to bring resolution to the embodied aspects of trauma and Existential Psychotherapy to give meaning and purpose to the spiritual/existential crisis that is often at the heart of mental illness and emotional distress.

Given the client-centred focus of my practice and the importance of building a strong therapeutic relationship, I strive to get to know my clients well and what it is that they hope to achieve through psychotherapy. Therefore, the initial session usually involves an extensive discussion of many aspects of the clients’ lives--what is working, what isn’t, and why they have chosen to come to therapy at this time. This is a learning process for both of us as clients recount their stories, articulate their areas of concern, and identify goals to be achieved in therapy. The sessions that follow are tailored to address the concerns and goals identified. The length of therapy is dependent upon the issues being addressed. Managing symptoms and gaining control over problem areas impacting clients’ daily lives are typically the focus of early sessions with more in-depth investigation of issues done later. The goal of most psychotherapy is for the client to eventually become “their own therapist,” and to be able to manage life on their own. Therefore, therapy may also include between session exercises or “homework” to help reinforce what is being learned in therapy and to speed the healing process. Areas of concern and goals are revisited periodically throughout the course of therapy.

Recently, I received my doctorate in counselling psychology, however, prior to my studies I had nearly 15 years of experience and extensive training as a psychotherapist and multifaith spiritual heath practitioner. My professional career has spanned a wide variety of clinical settings including, in-patient acute care, a mood disorders clinic, an ambulatory outpatient mental health service, community mental health and addiction services, a detoxification centre, refugee psychosocial services for survivors of torture, adolescent and university counselling services, primary care psychological services, neuropsychological services, equine assisted psychotherapy, as well as the Canadian Forces Reserves and Integrated Personnel Support Services. My dual professional designation and breadth of professional experience with a wide range of people has resulted in a rich and fulfilling career.

I am a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario, a diplomat with the Academy of Cognitive Therapists, and a certified spiritual health specialist with the Canadian Association of Spiritual Care. I am also a member of the Canadian Psychological Association, the American Psychological Association and the British Psychological Society. I received my doctorate in counselling psychology from, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, a postgraduate certificate in CBT for psychological trauma from the University of Oxford, Oxford, UK, a postgraduate diploma in Health Sciences: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in Existential Practice from the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling, Middlesex University, Middlesex, UK, a Master of Education in Counselling and Human Development from St Lawrence University, Canton, NY and a Master’s of Theological Studies from Trinity College, the University of Toronto.

It takes a lot of courage to face our most distressing thoughts, emotional reactions and behaviours, so from the outset, I’d like to applaud you for taking this first, important step to feeling better---choosing an appropriate therapist for you. For the past 15 years, I have been privileged to accompany numerous individuals and couples on a journey of growth and renewal. Below I’ve given you an overview of my areas of competency and how I generally work with clients. I look forward to meeting with you.

In individual therapy, I see clients who are experiencing depression and anxiety, having difficulties resolving past or current relationship issues and struggling with issues related to sexual functioning (e.g., arousal, desire, orgasm difficulties). I also support clients to address self and relationship issues in the aftermath of different types of traumatic and overwhelming life experiences, such as emotional and physical abuse and neglect and sexual abuse. I have extensive experience helping clients deal with grief from past losses, cope with work place stressors and burnout, face life-threatening or terminal illnesses and explore existential issues related to meaning and purpose. I am comfortable working with individuals from different socio-cultural identity groups (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity).

In terms of couple and sex therapy, I work with couple partners to address a wide range of relationship issues, including improving their capacities for emotional, physical and sexual intimacy, repairing ruptures to their bond in the aftermath of infidelities and betrayals, and managing conflicts over finances, parenting and extended family members (i.e., dealing with difficult in-laws). I also support couple partners to deal with challenging life circumstances in which one partner is afflicted with momentary or chronic physical or mental health issues, or terminal illness.

Throughout our journey together, I provide a confidential therapeutic relationship marked by compassion, empathy, genuineness and authentic engagement.
I am an integrative psychologist---my psychotherapeutic approach involves integrating different theories of human psychological development, and affective/emotion and neuroscience research and then tailoring treatment interventions in a manner that promotes greater self-resilience, authenticity, wholeness and healthy interdependency in relationships. I also draw from various scientific, evidence-based therapy approaches. Humanistic and experiential models inform how I work with you to explore your inner experience of distress, including the emotional reactions, feelings and thoughts that are troubling you. Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theories are employed as a frame to guide this exploration and to deepen our understanding of the impact of your earlier years on your present-day difficulties. Existential models inform my perspective on some of the inner struggles faced by all of us merely on the basis of our existence. Post-modernism also influences my clinical work in terms of my sensitivities to how social, cultural and historical contexts shape our subjective sense of reality, meaning-making and self expressions. Cognitive-behavioural and mindfulness-based strategies are employed to diminish symptoms and associated distress. Techniques from many different psychotherapy models are used to address your specific needs and concerns.

In an initial session, I’ll ask you to share your story about your present-day struggles. We’ll then work together to identify the core issues and goals to be addressed in therapy. In subsequent sessions, we’ll work together to assess the origins and explore the scope of your presenting issues. I also conduct a comprehensive scientific-based assessment of your difficulties---to help you gain an understanding of what might be at the root of your struggles with anxiety, depression or your relationship problems. During this assessment, I will use scientific, evidence-based measures along with taking an in-depth personal history and an account of your life experiences to provide you with insights about the nature of your current difficulties. In a third phase of therapy, the knowledge obtained from our initial session and the assessment will be used to develop targeted strategies to foster change. We’ll first work together to diminish your symptoms and associated distress, and then we’ll deepen our work to understand and change self and relationship issues underlying your concerns and symptoms.

I am currently the Executive Director at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships, and Head of the Personality Service, and the lead of the Personality & Interpersonal Functioning and Trauma & Dissociation Assessment Services. In my capacity as Executive Director, I work with Clinical Directors and Heads of Service to deliver leading edge scientifically-driven clinical programs and treatment and assessment services. I also ensure that ongoing education opportunities are made available to our psychologists.

I have published various journal articles and book chapters, presented papers and conducted workshops in the areas of couples, relationship trauma and sex therapy. I am an original proponent of an integrated Emotionally Focused Therapy model of couple and sex therapy. In individual therapy, I work with adults experiencing stress, depression, anxieties and phobias, obsessions, social and interpersonal difficulties, and trauma-related issues. Starting with a first session, the main goal is making you feel better, and you will be able to speak about your concerns and the reason for seeking treatment in a respectful, compassionate and non-judgmental space. We will also explore together your personal history using scientifically-based questionnaires to better understand the evolution of your difficulties. By the end of the session we will be discussing and developing a treatment plan you’re comfortable to adhere to.

In my clinical practice I use various treatment models, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MCBT), Motivational Interviewing (M.I), and Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET). Often a combination of approaches, including some psychoanalytical techniques, will be tailored to suit your needs and preferences.

At the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships, I am therapist and see adult clients under the supervision of Dr. Mark Coates, C.Psych. I am a board member of the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychotherapists and Psychometrists. I am currently eligible for registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) upon completion of my post-Master’s supervised work experience.

You have been feeling anxious or depressed and these feelings are interfering with your life. You often feel inadequate and are unsure why. You keep encountering the same life or relationships struggles. You have reached a dead end in your attempts to overcome your challenges and need extra help. Acknowledging the need for support and taking the steps to find it takes much courage and self-compassion, and I commend you for doing so. I provide psychotherapy treatment for individual clients facing issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, personality disorders, grief, as well as various identity (e.g., sexuality, gender, professional) and interpersonal relationship (e.g., family, couple, social) challenges. I believe we can get you to a better place in your relationship with yourself and with others.

During my years of practice I have built a particular interest and expertise in supporting individuals to heal and grow in the aftermath of traumatic experiences, including those dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Developmental Trauma (e.g., childhood experiences of physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect). As my research has particularly focused on sexuality as well as on sexual and gender identities, I also have a specific interest in working with individuals from the LGBTQ community. I know how holding various identities can impact self-concept and self-esteem and interpersonal relationships, and help individuals navigate through difficult life experiences faced by those with diverse backgrounds.

Beginning the process of therapy can bring with it anxiety for some---this is why I make it my priority to create a safe and welcoming space where you can share your most private thoughts, feelings, and emotional reactions at a pace that feels comfortable for you. In the first few sessions I will get to know you and your current difficulties by conducting a thorough assessment that involves personal history taking as well as the administration of scientific, evidence-based questionnaires to determine what is at the root of about current struggles. These first sessions will also be dedicated to determining the therapeutic goals that fit your needs and determining the therapeutic interventions mostly likely to help you reach your goals. As an integrative therapist, I combine various therapeutic approaches to tailor the course of therapy to your specific needs and style. My approach combines psychodynamic theories and intervention (including attachment, object relations, and systems theories) to help shed light on how your past experiences have influenced your present sense of self and interpersonal relationship dynamics. I also use cognitive-behavioural, experiential, and mindfulness-based approaches to help build moment-to-moment awareness of your internal experiences and how it influences your behaviours. I also use solution-focused and narrative approaches to help you build skills to create healing and change in your current life.

Over the past several years, I have provided psychotherapeutic services in a variety of contexts including the Montfort Hospital Borderline Personality Group and External Individual Clinics, an Employee Assistance Program, the Maison Alonzo Wright Community Center, and in my own private practice. I have also provided psychotherapeutic services for the Ottawa University Student Academic Success Service and for Public Works and Government Services Canada.

In order to ensure we are working in the best way to meet your needs, our first meetings will involve discussing the reasons you have come to therapy and conducting a comprehensive assessment. Along with evidence-based questionnaires tailored to your concerns, the assessment will enable to gain a better understanding of your psychological and emotional difficulties, personal history, relationships dynamics, support networks, as well as your own way of viewing recovery and/or personal growth. I will listen carefully to your concerns, help you identify challenges, and, with your input, design an individualized treatment plan to assist you in gaining insight into your struggles and reaching your therapy goals.

My therapeutic style comes from existential and interpersonally-focused approaches. More specifically, my experience consists of working with the following empirically-validated approaches to psychotherapy: emotionally focused therapy (EFT), object relations in gestalt therapy (ORGT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), brief psychodynamic psychotherapy, as well as using mindfulness-based techniques. I truly believe in seeking to understand your difficulties from your own experience without judgment, bias, or comparison, and continuously fostering belief in your capacity to induce change. This integrative approach can be very effective in helping you develop skills and techniques to better regulate emotions, deal with relationship conflicts, transform unconscious patterns, and improve upon self and relationship awareness to maximize the quality and meaning of your life.

I completed my B.A. in Psychology at Concordia University, and am in the final year of my Psychology Doctorate program (Psy.D.) at the Université du Québec en Outaouais. The subject matter of my ongoing thesis pertains to emotional intelligence and eating disorders. Other relevant professional experiences include a professional clinical internship at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, following an internship at my University’s psychological services clinic. I also completed a two-year internship in a private psychology clinic of integrative health in Montreal, assisting alongside my supervisor in various assessment and intervention activities in the field of health (including cancer, chronic illnesses, eating disorders, etc.), mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral psychology/psychotherapy.

Whether it’s working individually with children, adolescents, parents, or working with the family unit as a whole, my goal is to help you achieve the positive changes you are aiming for.

I have experience working individually with children, adolescents, and parents with a broad range of presenting concerns such as: anxiety, depression, emotion regulation, and attachment disturbances. I believe that parents are a great resource and source of strength for their children and can be an integral part to the treatment process. I also have experience in conducting psychoeducational assessments (learning disabilities, intellectual functioning, ADHD) using a variety of evidence-based tools and measures.

Taking a whole-person approach, our first meeting together will allow me the opportunity to understand the difficulties you are facing, the context in which those difficulties are occurring, and the strengths that you possess that we can use to help you overcome them. We will establish therapeutic goals and through a scientific-based assessment of your difficulties we will gain a better understanding of how to achieve those goals. I utilize a variety of evidenced-based therapeutic techniques (cognitive behavioural therapy, emotion focused therapy for individuals and families, attachment-based therapy) with the aim of tailoring the treatment approach to fit your individual needs and goals.

Training in a developmental psychology approach has allowed me to gain experience working with children, adolescents, and families in both individual and group settings. I have provided psychoeducational assessments in community settings such as the York Catholic District School Board and the York University Psychology Clinic, and clinical intervention services at Kindercare Psychology. I have also completed formal training in Emotion Focused Family Therapy and was lead facilitator on group anxiety interventions for adolescents. I am currently conducting my pre-doctoral residency at the CFIR under the supervision of Dr. Cassandra Pasiak, C.Psych. and Dr. Dino Zuccarini, C.Psych.

I am a member of the Canadian Psychological Association and have presented several research posters at national and international conferences such as the Canadian Psychological Association’s National Convention and the Society for Research on Adolescence Biennial Meeting. I took part in facilitating a pilot group-based Dialectical Behaviour Therapy skills program for children and conducted program evaluations for a peer-led school program. My research has generally focused on two areas - romantic relationships and dating violence in adolescents and program and process evaluation.

My clinical treatment is based on an integrative therapeutic framework; which means that I use various therapeutic modalities such as Adlerian psychology, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Multicultural Therapy, Feminist Therapy, Brief-Solution Focused Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples.

As an integrative psychotherapist, I will tailor my treatment approach to your unique needs. I draw from various theories of psychological development and evidence-based therapeutic approaches to inform my practice. Psychodynamic approaches are used to understand how your developmental history has shaped your beliefs about yourself and others and your interpersonal functioning. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based approaches (i.e., Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) are used to manage current feelings of distress, promote acceptance and awareness, and guide skillful behavioural changes. Solution-Focused Therapy is used to identify desired changes and develop specific action plans towards future goals. Experiential therapies are used to help you get in contact with and process your emotional and bodily experiences.

I completed my Honours B.Sc. in Psychology at McMaster University and my M.A. (Ed). in Counselling at the University of Ottawa. Currently, I am pursuing my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Fielding Graduate University.

For several years, I have provided therapeutic services in different settings and to a variety of populations. I have experience providing long-term psychotherapy and short-term therapy/academic counselling to individuals within university settings. I have also provided therapy services to a variety of clientele across Canada through an Employee Assistance Program. Sometimes they are feeling anxious, or depressed, or they are struggling in a relationship or with work. Sometimes, too, people come in because they are looking for support in reaching new heights and expressing the potential that they feel they have, but struggle to see manifest.

To help these people, there are a few different ways that I work. A person’s thoughts, feelings, behaviours, body, and spirit all make up who they are, and a psychotherapy process can involve targeting one or more of those parts. I work with many tools and strategies that are evidence-based, meaning that research has found them effective in helping people learn what to do to feel better in a difficult moment. I also work to find the root cause of what is going on, so that we can learn how the person began not feeling well to begin with. With that information, we can start to rework patterns and create insights so that over time, the person can grow to feel more consistently better.

Regardless of which specific psychotherapeutic modality we are using, I know that the relationship between psychotherapist and client is essential, and your actual experience of the therapy you are doing is most important. Because of this, I look to co-create a solid relationship with my clients, based on trust, openness, and effectively working as a team.

For over a decade, I have helped people to create a life, and express a self, that is a reflection of who they truly are on the inside. I am involved in teaching and training of other psychotherapists at a local university. I am also pioneering a line of research that investigates how we experience connection in important life moments, including the impact that connection has on us as people. My line of research also includes couple connection experiences, yoga and partner yoga, personal and interpersonal growth and development, and the integration of Eastern contemplative and Western psychological perspectives.

My clinical specialties include: anxiety, depression and mood disturbances, couples and relational issues, self-growth and self-development, grief and loss, spirituality, and trauma, including physical and sexual traumas. It is common for almost everyone to experience challenges, even hardships in their life. These experiences can cause us to feel overwhelmed and isolated, sometimes believing we are beyond our ability to cope. The decision to seek help is not always easy, but finding the right therapist means having a confidential collaborator who will work with you to find the solutions or directions that work best for you and can be a great first step toward feeling in control of your life. Healing and recovery look different for everyone, but they are within your reach. It would be my privilege to begin that journey with you as your therapist.

I have experience in helping people, individually and in groups, to rediscover and harness their inner resources. I am comfortable hearing your perspective, and I value the importance of ethnicity, culture, sexuality, and gender identity in shaping a person’s experiences. Maybe you are thinking about your lifestyle, workplace, or relationships, or need evaluation and treatment for mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, or support in dealing with the effects of trauma. Sometimes people may turn to drugs or alcohol to cope. Sleep issues, such as insomnia and nightmares, are also more common during times when we are challenged and stressed. Opening a dialogue with a therapist can be invaluable for feeling empowered to begin navigating a path forward.
During your first visit, I will invite you to share your experiences with me and offer my own thoughts and questions so that we can work together to develop your personal therapeutic goals. I will also use some of the well-developed scientific assessment tools, such as questionnaires, to help focus our inquiry and reveal some of the areas that may be of more immediate concern, or contributing more to your current distress. During later sessions, as the therapeutic relationship is formed and strengthened, we will be able to work toward achieving these goals, or reevaluating them, in light of new information and insights.

Through this collaborative process, I will draw on some of the theoretical perspectives and techniques from my “tool box” to ask questions and offer suggestions that may be useful to you. For instance, cognitive behaviour therapy is a well-known evidence-based therapy developed to identify thought patterns that are not helpful and tweak them a little so that they are more likely to lead to useful behaviours and more positive emotions. In other cases, we may explore your early life, or past and present relationships for information related to attachment. Perhaps information about your social environment, gender, culture, or sexuality will allow for greater insight. Perhaps you have lived with structural inequality and oppression. For some, an approach based on neuroscience is helpful for understanding the way our brains process information. This process will give both of us new information to shape the direction of the work we will do together and tailor treatments that may work best for you, including CBT, solution-focused approaches, and client-centered approaches. I am also experienced with CBT specifically for insomnia (CBT-I) and I can work with you on your sleep hygiene.

Over the past few years, I have provided clinical services in various settings, including the South East Ottawa Community Health Centre, and the Canadian Forces Health Services Centre in the General Mental Health Department. In addition, I am the Co-Founder of the Women Warriors’ Healing Garden, a non-profit organization dedicated to working with women who are living with the effects of trauma experienced while serving in uniform. I have also spent the past 15 years doing neuroscience research aimed at better understanding how our biological rhythms like sleep, hormones, and metabolism are influenced by the environment and affect our mental health, most recently at Carleton University, where I was an Adjunct Research Professor.

In addition to my practice, I continue to teach courses on mental health at Carleton University in the Psychology and Neuroscience Departments, as well as the School of Social Work. I have published a large number of articles on biological rhythms and the brain, including the ways that our sleep rhythms can be influenced by Alzheimer’s disease. In our first meeting I will give you the space to talk about your story, your background, what brought you to counselling, and the goals that you might have for our sessions. Following this we will conduct a comprehensive, scientifically-based assessment to help both you and I better understand your difficulties. From there, we will discuss realistic goals for our time together and we will come up with the best approach to meet those goals, making sure to incorporate your specific needs and strengths. I work from an integrative approach, which will incorporate elements of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Existential-Humanistic therapies, amongst other approaches, to help you achieve your therapeutic goals.

My previous experiences have involved one-on-one counselling over the telephone and electronically with adolescents and adults from a wide variety of populations. I have worked with individuals struggling with issues related to suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, and a variety of other mental disorders. I am currently completing a Master of Education with a concentration in Counselling Psychology at The University of Ottawa.

As a counsellor, I provide psychological assessments and treatment to adults and couples experiencing psychological and emotional distress in various areas. During our first meeting, I will focus on getting to know you and on establishing therapeutic goals that are meaningful to you. I aim to create a safe and non-judgmental space for you to share your story with me at a pace that is comfortable for you. I will also incorporate some scientifically-based assessment measures to deepen my understanding of your concerns. Following this, we will work together towards developing a plan incorporating different psychological treatments (e.g., attachment-based, cognitive-behavioural, emotion-focused, psychodynamic) to help you reach your goals.

I am currently in my fourth year of the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at the University of Ottawa. Life can be challenging and it takes a lot of courage to seek help during difficult times. Seeking out help is a sign of strength, and the first step towards healing and personal growth. I provide psychological therapy and assessment, including neuropsychological assessment, for adults who are experiencing distress in a variety of areas. These areas include but are not limited to: anxiety and stress, difficulties with emotion regulation, depression and mood disorders, grief and loss, existential issues related to meaning and purpose, and traumatic experiences, including the assessment of acquired brain injury. I am comfortable working with people that have longstanding mental health concerns and those who are experiencing difficulties for the first time. I am comfortable working with individuals from various socio-cultural backgrounds.

In our first meeting together, I will work with you to establish your goals and to understand your current concerns at a pace that is comfortable for you. Together we will create a plan to best meet your psychological needs or to answer some of the fundamental questions about your mental health that bring you through my door. In the following phases, I will use scientifically-informed assessment tools and therapies to help understand and work with you on your struggles. I work primarily from an integrated approach, bringing together many effective psychological treatment strategies to help you reach your goals. As we work together, I like to check-in to ensure we are working together in a way that feels right to you.

I am currently in my third year of the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at the University of Ottawa. I have provided psychological services in community clinics, private practice, and hospital settings including the Centre for Psychological Services at the University of Ottawa, the Ottawa Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and the Brockville Mental Health Centre, which is an extension of The Royal. In these settings, I have gained experience in psychodiagnostic and neuropsychological assessments, as well as providing psychotherapy for adults in individual settings. At CFIR, I am under the supervision of Dr. Mark Coates, C.Psych.

I am currently a member of the Canadian Psychological Association, the International Neuropsychological Society, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology. As a Vanier Scholar funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research I am actively involved in a number of scientific projects, based both in understanding neuropsychological concerns following traumatic experiences and cardiac events, but also to understand how coping processes from stressor experiences may lead to greater resilience or vulnerability to depressive symptoms. You have been feeling anxious or depressed and these feelings are interfering with your life. You often feel inadequate and are unsure why. You keep encountering the same life or relationships struggles. You have reached a dead end in your attempts to overcome your challenges and need extra help. Acknowledging the need for support and taking the steps to find it takes much courage and self-compassion, and I commend you for doing so. I provide psychotherapy treatment for individual clients facing issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, personality disorders, grief, as well as various identity (e.g., sexuality, gender, professional) and interpersonal relationship (e.g., family, couple, social) challenges. I believe we can get you to a better place in your relationship with yourself and with others.

During my years of practice I have built a particular interest and expertise in supporting individuals to heal and grow in the aftermath of traumatic experiences, including those dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Developmental Trauma (e.g., childhood experiences of physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect). As my research has particularly focused on sexuality as well as on sexual and gender identities, I also have a specific interest in working with individuals from the LGBTQ community. I know how holding various identities can impact self-concept and self-esteem and interpersonal relationships, and help individuals navigate through difficult life experiences faced by those with diverse backgrounds.

Beginning the process of therapy can bring with it anxiety for some---this is why I make it my priority to create a safe and welcoming space where you can share your most private thoughts, feelings, and emotional reactions at a pace that feels comfortable for you. In the first few sessions I will get to know you and your current difficulties by conducting a thorough assessment that involves personal history taking as well as the administration of scientific, evidence-based questionnaires to determine what is at the root of about current struggles. These first sessions will also be dedicated to determining the therapeutic goals that fit your needs and determining the therapeutic interventions mostly likely to help you reach your goals. As an integrative therapist, I combine various therapeutic approaches to tailor the course of therapy to your specific needs and style. My approach combines psychodynamic theories and intervention (including attachment, object relations, and systems theories) to help shed light on how your past experiences have influenced your present sense of self and interpersonal relationship dynamics. I also use cognitive-behavioural, experiential, and mindfulness-based approaches to help build moment-to-moment awareness of your internal experiences and how it influences your behaviours. I also use solution-focused and narrative approaches to help you build skills to create healing and change in your current life.

Over the past several years, I have provided psychotherapeutic services in a variety of contexts including the Montfort Hospital Borderline Personality Group and External Individual Clinics, an Employee Assistance Program, the Maison Alonzo Wright Community Center, and in my own private practice. I have also provided psychotherapeutic services for the Ottawa University Student Academic Success Service and for Public Works and Government Services Canada.

I am currently completing my doctorate in clinical psychology and working as a Counsellor for Child, Adolescent and Family therapy and assessment at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships under the supervision of Dr. Cassandra Pasiak, C.Psych.

My clinical interests reside in self-growth and self-esteem, trauma, multiculturalism, anxiety, depression, and substance use. For me, counselling represents an equal partnership between the client(s) and counselor, one in which both of our voices are valued and respected by the other. I believe that events that have occurred in our past create a blueprint for the story we live in present time, and my primary goal is for us to understand those important events and moments and work to alter and/or reduce maladaptive thoughts, behaviours, and emotions and create new and healthy patterns of interacting with the self and with others. We will also engage in a dialogue that allows us to discuss the meaning of your own life and the space you occupy in this world. With couples, I hope to address negative patterns that exist within the relationship and to improve intimacy (e.g., emotionally and physically). I use an individualized therapeutic approach for each client, one that is grounded in various therapies. As my counselling is integrative, I am interested in incorporating features of Psychodynamic, Cognitive-Behavioural, Existential-Humanistic (e.g., Client-Centered and Gestalt), Attachment-Based, Emotion-Focused Therapy, amongst others.

In our first session together, my hope is that we develop a rapport in which you feel comfortable to express yourself and not feel judged. Creating a partnership in which you feel fully accepted for who you are is essential for effective therapy. I hope to understand your story, your current struggles, and your therapy goals. I will also utilize scientifically-based assessment measures to gain a greater understanding of the difficulties you face. Following the initial session, I will provide you with my professional opinions so we can together build a plan to meet your therapeutic goals. During this phase, you will be given the space to decide the best approach for you. We will co-create a treatment plan that facilitates improvements in the parts of your life that matter the most to you, while enhancing your resiliency to deal with life stresses.

I will use an integrative approach that brings together various theories on which I will base my interventions to find the ones that are the most effective for your needs. My approach includes aspects from Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness-based Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Psychodynamic Theory.

I have work and training experiences in a variety of community settings, including the Montfort Hospital community services, and Montfort Renaissance. I have worked with individuals living with incurable illnesses, as well as with youth and adults living with mental health and substance abuse issues. I have helped them work toward recovery by starting their process of change and identifying personal strengths.

I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Ottawa and a post-diploma certificate in mental health and addictions at La Cité. I also work with clients who are dealing with past or present distressful or traumatic events.

Since every client and couple is unique, each with a different story, the treatment approach that I use is also unique since it is adapted to your specific needs. When we first meet, we will talk about your current concerns in a way that you feel comfortable. Our first meeting will help me get to know you, your core values and views about life and relationships, and to understand your needs. In order to help you gain a better understanding of what might be at the root of your struggles, I will also conduct a comprehensive scientific-based assessment of your difficulties using different questionnaires. With all this information, we can work together to identify and refine your goals for therapy and develop a plan to explore the issues and achieve these goals.

I take an integrative approach to therapy, which means that I draw from different therapeutic approaches when working with each client. I integrate various approaches to help you reach your therapeutic goals, including psychodynamic, attachment-based, emotion-focused and mindfulness-based, acceptance and commitment, cognitive-behavioural, and existential. Furthermore, I put clients at the centre and work with them in an open, genuine, and respectful way.

I have more than 20 years of experience in public health working in different capacities. At CFIR, I am currently providing clinical services, under the supervision of Dr. Dino Zuccarini, C. Psych. I am a member of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) and I am committed to ongoing professional development by regularly attending conferences and workshops. Your brain is a complex network of cells that work together to produce your unique self. Your brain’s sensitivity to damage and to psychological processes means that stressors can change the way that you experience the world. As a counsellor, I provide neuropsychological assessments for adults who would like to understand their cognitive strengths and weaknesses and the factors that influence these abilities.

During our first meeting, I will focus on getting to know you and the cognitive abilities that are troubling you. We will then meet to complete various standardized neuropsychological measures to better understand your cognitive abilities. Our final meeting will involve a feedback of your results and recommendations to help manage any difficulties that are impacting your cognitive functioning and wellbeing.

I am currently in my fourth year of the Clinical Psychology doctoral program at the University of Ottawa. My clinical interests include the examination of cognitive abilities related to neurological conditions, such as head injuries and dementia, and to psychiatric disorders. I am also interested in helping people adjust to their new lives following a brain injury using scientifically-validated approaches such as cognitive rehabilitation. My clinical training has focused on psychodiagnostic, psychoeducational, and neuropsychological assessments and individual psychotherapy for adults. My training settings have included the Centre for Psychological Services at the University of Ottawa, the Rehabilitation Centre of The Ottawa Hospital the Ottawa Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and the Child, Adolescent, and Family Centre of Ottawa. Prior to my doctoral degree, I also worked as a psychometrist in private practice where I administered neuropsychological tests for clients involved in medico-legal cases. In research, I am interested in behavioural neuroscience, psychoneuroimmunology, and sex differences. My doctoral research is examining differences in how males and females react to immune stressors during puberty.

I am presently working under the supervision of Dr. Mark Coates, C.Psych., at the Centre for Interpersonal Relationships. I am a member of the Canadian Psychological Association, the National Academy of Neuropsychology, the Society for Neuroscience, the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences, and the Society for Behavioural Neuroendocrinology.

By combining elements drawn from different schools of psychological theory and research, integrative therapy becomes a more flexible and inclusive approach to treatment than a more traditional, singular forms of psychotherapy.

Emotion-focused, acceptance and commitment, attachment-based, existential-humanistic, relational, and dialectical behavioural therapies are just a few of the scientifically-developed treatment modalities I may use to guide the therapeutic journey. An integrative approach ensures that the techniques and theoretical perspectives that I employ to guide our therapy are a good fit for you and for your concerns.

I completed my Honours Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology at Bishop’s University, where my undergraduate research thesis allowed me to collaborate with Middle-Eastern immigrant families with refugee backgrounds to determine their access to mental healthcare in Canada. Currently, I am in my final year of a Master of Arts program in Counselling Psychology at the University of Ottawa, pursuing research on the intersecting experiences of biculturalism and emerging adulthood. My research is conducted primarily in the field of community psychology, studying how to best assist individuals with complex mental health care needs as they navigate our health care system, as well as studying effects of homelessness and housing interventions. I recognize the commonly held belief that one can only fix their own problems themselves; but, I applaud you for believing that therapy can help you understand yourself and your difficulties, and equip you with the appropriate tools to tackle your problems head on! Admitting you could use outside assistance is a big accomplishment worth acknowledgement. I would like to take the opportunity below to provide you with an in-depth understanding of the services I provide; I look forward to taking this journey with you.

I have a foremost interest and experience in working through anxiety, depression, and trauma-related difficulties. I have extensive experience working with individuals dealing with issues in their home environment, be it loss, neglect or emotional abuse. My diverse experiences abroad, and with refugee assistance and social justice initiatives, guide my appreciation for the unique perspectives, values, expectations and beliefs of individuals of various cultural and spiritual backgrounds.

Finding the right therapeutic match is extremely important to establishing your comfort to open up. With my confidential services, I aim to do so through offering compassionate, positive, empathetic, non-judgmental support. I view my role as a support to help you reach your full potential by initially generating ways to manage the issues causing you distress. In our first session together, I aim to understand your core struggles and their origins and establish your goals for change or progress. Moving forward in subsequent sessions, a more comprehensive scientific-based assessment will be conducted to provide further insight and we’ll explore your concerns more deeply, to discover their root and how and why they are presently impacting your life. Next, we will re-examine these difficulties from alternate perspectives, using tailored strategies to generate change or diminish symptoms. When your mental health struggles are manageable, we will look to proactively understand and build positive mental health strategies moving forward.

While having witnessed extensive growth and change in minimizing psychological or relationship distress through the use of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based practices, I remain open to the use of all therapy modalities, as deemed adequate or needed. Understanding that every individual is unique, I see you as the expert of your own life, and adapt and customize therapy to meet your specific needs or concerns. Whether it be using the psychodynamic approach to discover the impact of the past on current issues, or bringing forth strengths you possess to counter problems in their present forms, the most effective approaches will be used. I regard therapy as the opportunity to empower you to challenge yourself and overcome mental health challenges and move towards personal goals and a better quality of life.

Life’s challenges can be incredibly stressful and can cause us to experience a wide variety of emotions. Sometimes the emotions we have in response to our life stresses can be very intense, even overwhelming, and cause us to react in ways that we don’t find helpful. One of the best reactions we can have is to seek help when we need it, but it takes self-knowledge to recognize when we need help, and courage to ask for it. You should be proud of yourself for taking that first step and reaching out for the support you need and deserve. I hope we can work together to help you learn and grow, and become better able to overcome whatever challenges life may bring.

I strive to provide therapy on an individual basis with adult clients who are experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, anger, trauma, low self-esteem, and other psychological and relationship difficulties. I aim to help clients to develop the tools they need to cope with life’s stresses, such as burnout from their place of employment, or heartache from the loss of a loved one. I also support clients who are using substances to self-medicate their emotional pain, and help them to become capable of living without the urge to self-medicate with harmful substances. Ultimately, my goal is to help clients to experience personal growth through self-exploration, find meaning in their lives, and resolve difficult emotions from their past and present experiences, so that they may live more satisfying, fulfilling, purposeful lives, improve the quality of their relationships, and realize their potential.

Every client is unique and has their own distinct qualities, issues, and concerns. This is why I prefer to tailor an individualized therapeutic approach for each client. I take an integrative approach to counselling, primarily incorporating aspects of Existential-Humanistic Therapy, Psychodynamic/Analytic Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy (DBT), as well as many other theoretical approaches. I firmly believe that everyone should be able to have access to a safe and supportive therapy environment that is free from prejudice and discrimination, and I am comfortable working with individuals from different socio-cultural identity groups; whatever a client’s gender, sexual orientation, race, or ethnicity, I hope to help them as best I can.

In our first session together, we’ll get to know each other until you feel comfortable to express yourself, and feel assured that you can talk to me without feeling judged. I’ll ask you to share with me the reason you reached out for counselling, and to tell me your story about the recent events in your life that have been causing you to feel stressed. I may also use scientifically-based assessment tools to gain a better understanding of the difficulties you face. Then we’ll take our first step in working together by talking about the big issues you want to focus on, and the goals you hope to achieve from the therapeutic process. Throughout the sessions that follow, we’ll work together to identify when and how the story of your presenting issues began, so that I may be able to provide insights about the nature of your currently presenting issues. As we gain a better understanding of the underlying events and experiences that led you to where you are now, we will combine our mental resources to find ways to grow from your experiences, lessen the intensity of your symptoms, and overcome your struggles.

I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (Honours) degree at Carleton University here in Ottawa, and I am currently enrolled in the Master of Arts - Counselling Psychology program at the University of Ottawa. I also completed a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree at Carleton University, and have been a musician since my childhood. In my spare time, to create meaning in my life, I enjoy writing and recording original music, and volunteering at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, which I have done for over two years. At CFIR, I am working as a Counsellor under the supervision of Dr. Aleks Milosevic, C.Psych.
